Palestine is a historic land in which both Judaism and Christianity were originated. It is considered â€Å"The Holy Land† because it is a sacred place to the Muslims and many stories in the Christian Bible take place in Palestine. Palestine’s geographical location between Egypt and southwest Asia has caused it to be the center of many wars for thousands of years. Arab and Jewish inhabitants of Palestine fought for control of the territory and in 1949 Palestine was split apart into Israel, Jordan, and Egypt making many of the former residents refugees. Israel has a much modernized transportation system. This allows the military to move troops and equipment quickly to any part of the country at any given time. Israel has a prosperous method of trade both in and out of the country which is in a large part because of its advanced method of transportation. This journey, though not always easy for me and my family, has taught me the value of persistence, the importance of being organized, the benefits of aiming high and the knowledge that it is okay to ask for and accept help. Because he was my favorite uncle, I immediately asked our babysitter to read for me. Bit by bit she read it to me and to my surprise I became more and more interested in it. I started to read on my own. It was hard but I really wanted to read it. I started spending more time reading. Now, I read as much as possible. I love to read all kinds of science, science fiction and fantasy. I have come so far in language arts skills that I have earned As for all four years in my high school English courses. Sometimes I help others with their work. I am now able to do all this because of hard work, persistence and dedication. I still have small problems from my learning disability (writing this paper was especially hard), but I try to fight them every time and always succeed. One shouldnt merely settle for success: that is like settling for survival. One should try to excel in all one does. Writing papers is still one of the harder tasks for someone like me with a learning disability. However, if one persists with something and keeps on trying, even a weakness can be overcome. Applying this strategy to other areas can turn mere survival into excellence.

That helped to understand the relationship between Lilys father T- Ray and her caregiver Rosaleen. There are many conflicts in the film but the main conflict is that Lily must learn the past of her dead mother in order to understand what is, her own life. The conflict is resolved when Lily meets August Boatwright. She worked as Lily s mother Deborah caregiver. So August is able to tell her the truth about her mothers past of what really happened before she passed away. Opposed to the story T-Ray has fabricated due to his own anger. Many of the characters experienced external conflict. Lily struggles with the fact that she accidently killed her mother when she was 4 years old. Rosaleen has conflict with racism because during the THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES 1960s that is what African Americans had to deal with. T-Ray struggles with the way his life turned out abusing Deborah, then her leaving him, then she passes away. Now he he treats there daughter the same way. The Boatwright sisters carry the hurt of there sister that passed away and June Boatwright refuses to marry because she wants to be seen as independent woman. The bees in this film symbolize people working together in society. The beehive is always busy because the bees work together to build their nest. The black virgin Mary statue symbolized the blessed mother, the mother figure they all needed for the guidance, love, and strength. In the film August gives Lily the whale pin that belonged to her mother. The pin was given to her mother by her father. To Lily that means he did know how to love and wasnt always mean. Last but not least at the end of the film Lily moves into the Boatwright house and she has her own room. She decides that she will not go back with T-ray and she will stay with the sisters. Lilys new room symbolized a new beginning for where she would be loved. The irony of the film is very dramatic the film expresses the feelings of many women who are sometimes happy, sad, or mad. I can relate to the characters through THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES the many emotions they display throughout the film. The actors in this film are Dakota Fanning (Lily Owens), Jennifer Hudson (Rosaleen), Queen Latifah (August Boatwright), Alicia Keys (June Boatwright), Sophie Okonedo (May Boatwright), Tristan Wilds (Zach Taylor), Paul Bettany (T-Ray Owen), Nate Parker (Neil), Hilaire Burton(Deborah Owens). These actors present in this film represent wild cards like Dakota Fanning and Tristan Wilds. Character actors such as Hilaire Burton, Nate Parker, and Paul Bettany and finally Personality actors Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, and Alicia Keys. The actors in this film covey the stories meaning by becoming the characters. They had to act as if they were really in the times of 1964. I think the director attributes a great deal of the characters performance because the director knows exactly how he or she wants the character to be portrayed. The way the actors are placed and moved around in the settings contribute to understanding the characters and the story because it makes things more clear as into what is going on. For example in the scene where Lily helps Rosaleen to escape from the hospital after she is beaten and arrested. Due to it being 1964 a black women could not just walk around THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES without being questioned about where she is going. Rosaleen and Lily had to hide and sleep in the woods until they made it to there destination. That scene helped to understand what it was like for a black woman during the civil rights movement. In the scene where August Boatwright is teaching Lily how to bee keep. They are outside with many trees, grass, and dirt. The camera captures the whole scene as Lily and August walk toward the beehives, showing the two in protective gear from head to toe. Then the camera focuses on one character at a time as the speak and then zooming in on the actual beehive. The lighting seems to be natural outdoor daylight or high key lighting. In the scenes that reflected the past the color was black and white. Also in this scene I felt that the shot was both a long and a medium shot. The editing of this film was pretty simple. A large amount of the transition was a direct cut. In the scene when Lily and Zach go to the movies. Zach is taken away by a group of white guys because he is black and he has his arm around Lily who is a white girl. Once he is grabbed the scene dissolves and we see Lily running to the Boatwright sisters to tell them what happen. In addition to that a day had gone pass where we dont see Zach, so we assume the worst but he is then found and he has been beaten. This THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES editing implies that Zach had got beaten up however we do actually see that. Dialogue, music, and sound effects are all present in the film. The dialogue I hear during the film are between all the characters I have previously mentioned. Sound effects were present when T-Ray found Lily at the Boatwright sisters home he was driving fast and came to a sudden stop. I hear screeching of the brakes on his truck and the slamming of the truck door. The music was usually a slow ballad depending on the emotions of the scene. In many scenes there was a narrator and the narrator was the main character Lily Owens. The effects that this has on film are that we know everything Lily is thinking and feeling it helps to understand why she feels certain ways about things. In The Secret Life of Bees (2008) the directors point of view Is evident. She touches base on child abuse and domestic violence and its effects on a person. As well as racism, suicide, and unconditional love. I have actually saw one other movie by the director Gina Price Bythewood and I must say they are completely different. While they are both dramas the tone is very different. Love Basketball (2000) is more of a romantic drama while also involving sports. I dont think the director THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES uses any non traditional story telling techniques. I felt that the director was trying to tell that no matter how old you are you still long for that mother figure to guide you and love you and that the truth shall set you free. Overall this film has a huge impact on society as well as societies huge impact on the film. For someone like myself who was not born in the time frame set forth which was 1964. It is sometimes disturbing to watch things associated with racism because what we see in movies arent real and not to mention those things arent even half of what really happened to African Americans. The impact of society on this film is that during these times it was normal for domestic violence to go unnoticed if you were white. The genre of The Secret Life of Bees(2008) is drama. This does not fall into the category of genre film because drama is not listed. Typical elements of a relevant genre can help you understand a film better because it allows you to differentiate between what is what and directs you into the right direction in which the film is going. THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES In conclusion, I have covered storytelling, acting, cinematography, editing, sound, style and directing, genre, and impact on society and vice versa. In covering all of these topics I now understand films better than ever. As I watch television shows and movies, I find myself noticing things like shots, angles and lighting. The Secret Life of Bees provides the audience with just that. It was very easy to notice the behind the scenes things like, cinematography and editing.

Family Interview Essays Family Interview Essay Family Interview Essay It is my pleasure to introduce you to the Dixon and Campbell families. Within this extended, two earner household, there are two pairs of married couples and two adolescents. James and Charlene are the owners of the home and are also the parents of Christine. Christine and Jim live In the house with their two children. Each of the four adults work outside of the home and the girls attend school. I have had the opportunity to become parallelized with this family by working with Christine in the past. I chose them because they were gracious enough to allow me to interview them and use what we discussed to write my family essay. This middle lass Christian family is made up of Caucasians. James and Charlene have been married for thirty-nine years and have two daughters, one of which is Christine. Jim and Christine have been married for thirteen years and have two daughters, Alias; twelve and Emmanuel; nine. Each of the adults has full time occupations and the girls are full time students, as well as, their participation in sports and other extra- curricular activities. The family shows cohesion by attending church together on Sunday mornings and eating lunch together after church. This is one of the few days every week that the adults are able to be off of work at the same time. Throughout the rest of the week they all coordinate schedules so that Alias and Emmanuel has child care without having to have anyone from outside to tend to them. The girls have never had a babysitter separate of their immediate household. This may sound strange and to most people, it is, however Charlene had a good reason to ask her daughter and son-in-law to stay with her husband and her not long after Christine and Jim were married. : The younger couple lived in a mobile home as their first residence together and became pregnant Just a few months after they tied the knot. However, one morning, into Christinas first trimester, the trailer caught on fire and was badly damaged. Christine and the baby were able to get out safely, while Jim was at work. This is what prompted the newlyweds to move Into the parents home. They did not expect that they would be there more than a few months. Almost thirteen years later, everyone In this family seems very content with the current arrangements. Over time the family has had Its ups and downs. They each explained to me about a time when miscommunication or lack thereof caused issues to arise amongst them. This would be expected in a double couple household, not to mention being that they are parents and adult children under the same roof. Through trial and error, they all agreed that, they are able to work problems out by sitting down to discuss what the situation is and come to a fair and equitable compromise to fix it. When I asked the family about what specific struggles that they had faced, they all appeared to be perplexed. It took some time but Charlene finally came up with the struggle of how outsiders view her family. She explained that because the living arrangement that they live In Is not common, many people view It as strange and some view It as wrong. She and the other adults have had to defend their choices In how they all live together, at least one time, to someone outside of their household. Alias and Emmanuel also mentioned that they had been teased at school occasionally as well. The older of the two girls told me it was because the everyone pays their part of the living expenses and contributes to household supplies and groceries. Christine and Jim are primary financial providers of Alias and Emmanuel. Charlene and James treat the girls as normal grandparents would and buys them gifts and treats occasionally so as not to overdo it or spoil the encounters. There is an obvious concerted cultivation practiced in this family, as all of the adults encourage and praise the talents and abilities of the children. The parenting styles of each adult made the impression to me to be that mainly of the authoritative style. While listening to some of the stories talked about of Christinas upbringing, her father could have been labeled more authoritarian and her mother, more permissive while she was growing up. She told me that she thinks that over the years, her parents opposite styles meshed together quite nicely to create their more costive grand parenting style that they presently possess. Christine is thankful for her parents and the Alias and Emmanuel could not love their Grandma and Grandpa any more. Roles in this family are shared, Just like they share the care of the children. Christine and Charlene do most of the deep house cleaning; likewise James and Jim do the heavier yard work and handy man type chores around the house. However, all of them take part in cooking and preparing meals, doing laundry, and basic yard and house work. Alias and Emmanuel have daily chores; they are required to help with after meal clean up and taking care of their own rooms. The girls enjoy helping dad and grandpa with guy stuff and are encouraged to learn how to be as self-sufficient as possible. When writing this paper I am reminded of the television show Modern Family. For those who have not had the opportunity to be versed on how the stereo typical American family has evolved over the years, it is definitely no longer the Cleavers world out there! The Dixon and Campbell families would be a good addition to the television show, so that this type of extended family could be portrayed as normal amongst the other diverse families that are in existence nowadays.

Whats a Good 7th Grade ACT

What's a Good 7th Grade ACT / SAT Score SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips The SAT / ACT is incredibly important for many students. It's used to determine admissions into talent programs like Duke's TIP or Johns Hopkins CTY. It's also a good predictor of future college potential. But how do you know what a good SAT / ACT score is for someone in middle school? Here, Dr. Fred Zhang does a novel analysis on two data setsto find what is considered a good score for middle school students. The ACT andSAT Are Made for High School Students. What Does This Mean for You? First, a bit of background is needed. The ACT / SAT is primarily used as ahigh schooltest forcollegeadmissions. This means a few things. The SAT is normed at 500 points per section, while the ACT is normed around a 20. Norms are enforced average scores for high school students. Check out these links if you want to know more about what's a good ACT score for a high school student, or what's a good SAT score for a high school student. If you use atable for high school students to examine a middle school student's score, your results will be completely wrong. You need to use a guide, like this one, that is specifically crafted for middle school students. Also, remember that the content on the ACT / SAT is high-school level, including geometry and topics usually tested in US high schools. Therefore, performing badly on these tests in middle school should not be taken as a lack of ability - sometimes it's just the result of never having learned the content. How We Found the Data Few 7th graders take the SAT / ACT, so finding out what's a good or bad score is not as easy as looking at a table of percentiles from the test makers. Instead, we use two unique data sets: the Duke TIP program data set and the John Hopkins CTY data set. (In regards to the new SAT, we came up with these estimates based on data from the old version of the SAT, but we expect them to stay pretty accurate for the new version of the testthat will have its first administrationin March 2016.) These are groups of very talented 7th graders who take the SAT / ACT, so we can't just take the average and distribution of these data sets to look for an average for all 7th graders. Instead, we used a statistical technique called quantile matching / maximum likelihood to infer the distribution of all 7th graders. The two data sets agree, and here arethe results. Results: Distribution of 7th Grade ACT / SAT Scores The average scores of a 7th grade student are lower than those of a high school student. In fact, we find that the scores on the SAT are a full 400points lower, while the scores on the ACT are about 10 points lower. Therefore, the SAT score of the median7th grader is about a 300 per section on the SAT, while the ACT score of the median7th grader is about a 10. A standard deviation in the SAT is around 100 points per section, and is around a 6 on the ACT. This means that the scores translate as follows: Interpretation Percentile ACT Score SAT Score Below Average 25% 4 200 Average 50% 10 300 Above Average 75% 16 400 Excellent 95% 23 500 What this data shows us is that, if you score about an 10 on the ACT or a 300on each section of the SAT (or a 600 with both sections combined), you're getting about the average score for a 7th grader. If you score around a 4on the ACT or a 200for each SAT section, then about three-quarters of other 7th graders would have a higher score than you. What's a Good SAT / ACT Score for a 7th Grader? From the table above, we can conclude that a good SAT / ACT score for 7th graders, a score that beats three-quarters of similar students in the USA, is a 16 on the ACT and an 800on the SAT. However, as I warned above, the SAT / ACT is not intended to evaluate 7th graders, so don't despair if your score is lower than this. You can always boost it later by learning the content and studying more. How Can 7th Graders Prepare for the SAT / ACT? Now that you know what a good standardized test score for a 7th grader is, how can you keep improving your score until it's where you want it to be? They both compare the harsh reality without being too gruesome. Persepolis uses a more cartooned illustration to portray a childlike perspective thus having a target audience of young readers. In contrast, the Vietnam imagery’s perspective differs in the point of view. This shows the difference in fighting in the war rather than suffering the consequences, demonstrating an adult understanding. War can convey many emotions depending on the authors/illustrators mood they want to convey to the readers by using simple and/or complex emanata and graphic weight in similar and different ways. Persepolis and the vietnam both inflict a sympathetic emotions by showing  the struggles shown by their stressed emotions and facial styles. As well as their similar use of contrast between light and darkshows a emotional aspect of the conflict of war. To contrast the Vietnam images uses shading and shadows to add more tension and grit displaying a impactful emotion. The Persepolis imagery uses thick heavy blacks and whites without any shading making the images simple and the emotions it portrays to the reader shallow and not as complex. In conclusion these two works of graphic reading can be contrasted and compared by only three categories of realism, target age groups, and emotions. Comparative Commentary Text 1 Those Winter Sundays, Text 2 The Boat Essay

Text 1 and Text 2, both have the common theme of fathers. Text 1 is a poem titled â€Å"Those Winter Sundays† by Robert Hayden, while Text 2 is an extract of the short story â€Å"The Boat† by Alistair Macloed. The purpose of Hayden is to tell the story and to tell younger people to appreciate their father; on the other hand Alistair MacLoed’s purpose was to entertain the audience. The common theme are the fathers, both texts narrate the story and the relationship between a father and a son. Both texts show how they treated their fathers in a careless way but then realized they shouldn’t have. In text 1 he realizes too late, and he can’t do anything to change it, however in text 2 the character realizes just on time and starts loving his father and appreciating what he does. There are several other similarities and differences like the fact that both fathers do hard work and they probably belong to the working class or even to the poorer class. This can be seen as in text 1 the father had hands that â€Å"ached from labour in the weekday†; in text 2 the father is a â€Å"fisherman†. Both fathers dedicate lots of their time and effort to their families, in text 1 the father wakes up really early so he can warm the room for his children to wake up into a comfortable room while in text 2 the father sacrificed his â€Å"dreams and inclinations† and lived a life doing what he really did not want for the benefit of the family. Similarities are also found in the tone. The tone in both texts is regretful. In text 1 the regretful tone is suggested through the description of the father, â€Å"Cracked hands that ached† as this increases our empathy towards the father, furthermore in text 2 the regretful tone is suggested through the description of the father’s action as â€Å"he burned and reburned over and over again†. This is also to increase empathy. Increasing the empathy helps us connect more to the author and be able to understand his regret. Another way through which regret is portrayed in text 1 is thought Robert Hayden’s last lines, with the rhetorical question at the end â€Å"What did I know,† This quote shows how Hayden has now realized how much effort his father had put into the family, this also shows how Hayden feels that it is too late to do something now that he has realized. In text 2 the tone of regret is portrayed not only through the description of the father but also through how the short story develops. The structure of text 1 is very different to text 2, first of all the fact that text 1 is a poem and text 2 a short story. As it was already mentioned, the regretful tone in text 2 is transmitted through the development of the story; the story is structured in paragraphs. The structure of the short story is very important as it starts by setting the scene as it describes the â€Å"good summer†. In the second paragraph Alistair MacLoed describes the father and how he suffers and keeps on working, â€Å"his lips still cracked so that they bled when he smiled†, this starts creating a tone of guilt as the character saw his dad suffer and did nothing. In the third paragraph we notice some transformation as he starts to realize the hard work his father does but it’s in the last paragraph is where we see the biggest change as he changes his attitude and starts loving his father. Structure is also very important in text1, the poem. It is a short poem that contains 3 stan zas. There is no rhyme in the poem as rhyme introduces a happy, joyful connotation; Robert Hayden decided not to include rhyme as this poem corresponds to a melancholic and sad relationship between father and son. When it comes to sentence lengths, text 1 contains 5 sentences, they are very different in sentence length as we have a very short one, â€Å"No one ever thanked him.† and really long ones as the 4th sentence, which takes up 6 lines. The poem isn’t structured as a poem but as a narrative, if the same text would not be in stanzas it would be a narrative. However in Text 2, as the text is structured in paragraphs, we can see how the sentences change depending on which paragraph they are in. For example, in paragraph 2, the one that tells us the dad’s sacrifices the sentences are long and the use lots of â€Å"and†, this gives a sense of continuous and a sense of repetition, which makes you feel the father’s pain. It is a very effective sentence a s it increases the empathy. Both texts have similarities and differences regarding language. Text 1 ends with a rhetorical question, this rhetorical question increases the regret already portrayed in the poem and the feeling of guilt as it is already too late to change anything and previously he hadn’t noticed his father’s effort. The diction through out the poem is quite simple, as the poem is directed to young people. Robert Hayden used imagery to create empathy towards the father as he is described as waking up in the â€Å"blueblack cold† and his â€Å"cracked hands that ached†. The use of the words â€Å"chronic angers† suggest tension in the family and opens the possibility of a long lasting fight happening inside the house, â€Å"speaking indifferently to him† also adds into the suggestion of tension in the house and the use of the word â€Å"indifferently† creates guilt as he treated his dad in an indifferent way. Furthermore Alistair MacLoed, the author of text 2 uses common diction through out the short story, the diction in both texts is very similar. MacLoed uses several times the word â€Å"and† there are several purposes for the use of the word â€Å"and†, at the beginning, when describing the father’s effort the word â€Å"and† is used for repetition as it increases the effect of empathy in the sentence. Later on in the story the word â€Å"and† is used to link ideas and to establish a good relationship between father and son as the text reads with a happier but still regretful tone. In conclusion both texts have clear similarities and differences as they both shared the topic of fathers and their relationship with their sons, though they have different purposes and therefore differences.

What is Self awareness? It is the ability to read one’s emotion and recognize their impact while using guts feeling to guide decisions. It includes recognition of our personality, our strengths and weaknesses, our likes and dislikes. Developing self-awareness can help us to recognize when we are stressed or under pressure. It is also often a prerequisite for effective communication and interpersonal relations, as well as for developing empathy for others. Self awareness is the ability to option or choice to choose thoughts being thought rather than simply thinking the thoughts that are stimulated from the accumulative events leading up to the circumstances of the moment. Why is self awareness important? If you want to change your life in any way you need to know yourself before you can act. You need to know what you need to do to head in the right direction and you can't do that until you know yourself. In addition, being self aware will mean that you will be better able to choose a suitable career which will satisfy you. Self awareness can enrich your life because you can move closer to your values and realizing your dreams. Becoming self aware does not mean being selfish though. Discovering the inner you will enable you to give more of yourself to others and this will benefit your relationships as well as helping to build your self esteem and confidence as you become true to yourself†¦ As you grow in self awareness, you will better understand why you feel, what you feel and why you behave as you behave. The Khmer Empire Water Management System The Angkor civilization, or Khmer Empire, was a complex state in southeast Asia between AD 800 and 1400. It was remarkable, among other things, because of its extensive water management system stretching across over 1200 square kilometers (460 square miles), which connected the natural lake Tonle Sap to large man-made reservoirs (called baray in Khmer) through a series of canals  and permanently altering the local hydrology. The network allowed Angkor to flourish for six centuries despite the difficulties of maintaining a state-level society in the face of successive dry and monsoon regions. Water Challenges and Benefits Sources of permanent water tapped by the Khmer canal system included lakes, rivers, groundwater, and rainwater. The monsoonal climate of southeast Asia divided the years (and still does) into wet (May-October) and dry (November-April) seasons. Rainfall varies in the region between 1180-1850 millimeters (46-73 inches) per year, mostly in the wet season. The impact of water management at Angkor changed natural catchment boundaries and eventually led to erosion and sedimentation of channels requiring considerable upkeep. Tonle Sap is among the most productive freshwater ecosystems in the world, made so by the regular flooding from the Mekong River. Groundwater in Angkor can today be accessed at ground level during the wet season and 5 meters (16 feet) below ground level during the dry  season. However, local groundwater access varies greatly across the region, with bedrock and soil characteristics at times resulting in a water table as much as 11-12 m (36-40 ft) below the ground surface. Water Systems Water systems were used by the Angkor civilization to cope with the vastly changing water quantities included raising their houses on mounds or stilts, building and excavating small ponds at the household level and larger ones (called trapeang) at the village level. Most trapeang were rectangular and generally aligned east/west: they were associated with and perhaps controlled by the temples. Most temples also had their own moats, which were square or rectangular and oriented in the four cardinal directions. At the city level, large reservoirs- called baray- and linear channels, roads, and embankments were used to manage water  and may have formed an intercommunication network as well. Four major baray are in Angkor today: Indratataka (Baray of Lolei), Yasodharatataka (East Baray), West Baray, and Jayatataka (North Baray). They were very shallow, between 1-2 m (3-7 ft) below ground level, and between 30-40 m (100-130 ft) wide. Baray were built by creating earthen embankments of between 1-2 meters above the ground level and fed by channels from natural rivers. The embankments were often used as roads. Archaeologically-based geographic studies of the current and past systems at Angkor suggests that Angkor engineers created a new permanent catchment area, making three catchment areas where there once was just two. The artificial channel eventually eroded downward and became a river, thereby altering the natural hydrology of the region. Male And Female Gender Roles Throughout history, people who are born as men are granted access to power, position and resources (Masculinities). Cultural norms of gender roles are taught to children by their family, peer group, and community (Masculinities). Based on sufficient research, this review of literature will first focus on the historical facts about how womens status is undermined by inequality and persecution because they were deemed as inferior biological beings (Inferiority). Subsequently, the review will also answer the question of whether women in the present have successfully achieved their rights and gender roles in society completely. At a surface level, womens rights have largely been won (Gaag 146), because more women are working, more girls are being educated (Gaag 146). However, this paper will also investigate how women today continue to experience discriminations and inequality as more than half a million die unnecessarily each year from the complications of pregnancy and childbirth (Gaag 146). Lastly, the final part of this literature review will examine how women have broken free from the gender stereotypes to achieve power in terms of work and family and its effects on men and society (Marshall). A. Historical facts about the Male and Female roles Beyond the physical differences between men and women and their different reproductive functions are separate sets of socially-determined behavioral norms and performance standards attached to each gender (Thomas). However, during the era of Greek Philosopher Aristotle, Womens status was very low (inferiority). According to Aristotle, the primary function of women was to carrying on the family tree, and tending the family hearth (inferiority). The reproduction of children, especially sons (inferiority), was the main purpose of women, and all of the mens social activities were off-limits to her (inferiority). In Aristotles theory of genetics, he proposed that children were made by something he called the substance, which was found in women, and the form, which came from men (Genetics). According to his theory, Aristotle suggested that the form and the substance did not mix together but the form had a magical influence on the substance (Genetics) In other words, the man supplies the su bstance of a human being, and the women is only the nourishment (Inferiority). From Aristotles point of view, it is only men who are complete human beings and can hope for ultimate fulfillment; the best a women can hope for is to become a man (Inferiority) However, Aristotles teacher, Plato, thought differently about women (Plato). Plato believed that women had a significant role to play in society, and he thought women were necessary for society to run smoothly (Plato). According to Plato, even though he believed that females were required to function in a working society, he continue to hold the position that women were no where close to equal to men (Plato) On the other hand, Plato realized that men may have been stronger then women physically but women had strengths that were far superior in other areas (Plato) For example, he believed that women are naturally maternal and these maternal skills made them better care takers for children (Plato). Similarly to Aristotles radical vi ew on women, French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte thought, women were made for men, and men for country, family, glory, and honor (Napoleon). In the 1800s, the idea of female equality received a setback in a series of laws known as the Napoleonic Code (Napoleonic). According to the Napoleonic Code, married women in particular owed their husband obedience, and were forbidden from selling, giving, mortgaging or buying property (Napoleonic). As time progress from the Ancient Greeks to the early stages of the last century, men continued to be regarded as the persons in charge of their families (Thomas). According to census, males were considered to be the head of the household by family members, and the power within the household was completely dominated by the male figure (Thomas) and other family members were defined by their relationship to the household head (Thomas). According to experts, womens responsibility of bearing children continued until the early part of the last century (Thomas). In 1941, over 83% of 15 years old or over had birthed a child and one in five had given birth to six or more (Thomas). Womens fertility continued to be disregarded by the society, and their prominent roles (Thomas) of giving birth and raise children within a male-headed family (Thomas) was unchanged. B. Present womens success and failure at achieving the rights and power According to experts, womens rights, in theory at least, are well established (Gaag 11) and women themselves are more aware of their rights (Gaag 11). However, even though the matter of gender equality between male and females has firmly been placed on the global agenda, we cannot hide the fact that for millions of women life is still very grim (Gaag 11). Although women are having fewer children, that is 50 per cent of women now have access to modern contraceptives (Gaag 11), over half a million women continue to die each year from pregnancy and childbirth related causes (rights). Researcher found that accounted for 41 percent of all births nationwide between 1993 and 2006 (Pittman), there are 62 percent of pregnancy-related deaths (Pittman). Despite the international agreement on womens rights, the denial of womens basic human rights is persistent and widespread (Rights). Like mentioned above, becoming a mother is still a dangerous business (Gaag 26). On the economic scheme of things, during the 20th century, the proportion of married women working for pay increased more than tenfold from less than 5 percent in 1890 to more than 60 percent in 1990 (Mundy 33). The proportion of women ages 25 to 54 who are working or looking for work stands at 75 percent, up from 35 percent in 1950s (Muddy 38) Even though women have expanded their work hours, battled discrimination, and improved their credentials at precisely the time when the rewards for these are greater than ever (Muddy 38), Poverty rates are higher for women than men (Cawthorne). In 2007,13.8 percent of females were poor compared to 11.1 percent of men (Cawthorne). It was also proven by experts that women are poorer than men in all ethic groups (Cawthorne). According to collected data, the trend that men are wealthier than women is very apparent (Cawthorne). This again ties to the fact that, despite some progress in womens wages in the 1990s, women still earn less than men, even for similar kinds of work (rights). Lastly, there is no doubt that more girls are being educated the gap between boys and girls enrollments has narrowed (Gaag 11). Women have improved their credentials precisely the time when the economy craves their skills and schooling (Muddy 53). By becoming well educated, women have raised the chances that they will be employed, and they qualify for much better job than they could have expected 30 or 40 years ago (Muddy 51). According to experts, education is a key reason why womens earnings have risen and why in recent recessions, the unemployment rate for women has been lower than the rate for men (Muddy 51). Through womens persistency, women have improved their prospects more than they realize (Muddy 51). C. The drastic change in gender roles and its effects on both genders While the stereotype of the male breadwinner is still alive in many peoples minds, experts say the reality is that a growing number of women are earning as much, if not more than, their husbands (Linn). In a matter of decades, the traditional male breadwinner model has given way to one where women routinely support households and outearn the men they are married to (Muddy 5). Not that long ago, in 1970, percentage of wives who outearned their husbands was in the low single digits (Mundy 6). The dramatic increases of women earners have altered the way male and female see each other (Mundy 7). Ironically, experts estimate that there are currently about 2 million working women whose husbands are unemployed and looking for work (Linn). The effect of the gender roles shift is most apparent in the male than the female (Muddy 14). In journalism and feminist literature of the 1980s and 1990s (Muddy14), experts found that men tend to resist womens rising economic power, even retaliate against it (Muddy 14). Similarly, one of the other reactions of men towards womens earnings is that men can quit, give up and stop trying (Muddy 14). For all the arguments about women opting-out when they have children, todays mothers- particularly educated ones- are overwhelmingly likely to be employed (Muddy 38). The roles of men and women seems to have shifted, and the earning power of wives compared to husbands has risen, steadily and strongly (Muddy 39). On the other hand, the rate of participation in housework labor increased steadily for men, while the rate for women remained the same (Marshall). Among married men with children, the participation rate rose from 54% to 71%. Furthermore, while the presence of a wife lessened mens involvement in housework in 1986 (single men had a participation rate of 61%, and married men 53%), 2005 saw roughly 7 in 10 married men, both with and without children, participating in housework (Marshall). According to data on men and women rate of participation in housework, married men with children spending significantly more time on housework, and married women spending significantly less (Marshall). Whereas women, The number of hours worked has risen (Muddy 39), and women are much more likely to be working full-time, year-round, than they were 40 years ago (Muddy 39). Conclusion: In conclusion, women came a long way in achieving their rights and ideal roles in society. Based on historical facts about male and female roles, females are the majority of humanity but are everywhere victims of systematic discrimination, oppression and sexual abuse (Oppression). Through their tenacity, women thrived as powerful individuals and economically and socially bypass men. However, according to data, womens gains have been made under threat (Gaag 11), and many continued to suffer from unfavorable conditions such as poverty, childbirth complications, and workplace discrimination. Despite these persistent disadvantages of the female sex, within a generation, more households will be supported by women than by men (Muddy 78). A revolution is under way (Muddy 65).

Sexually Transmitted Diseases   Ã‚  Ã‚   What are Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's)? How much do you know about STD's? Do you know how to protect yourself from STD's? The answer to these questions is that most people don't know, and if they do, it's very little. Sex has become a big issue in the 90's. Wherever a person looks, sex is advertised. What do you see when you turn on the television, daytime or night? Sex. What do you see when you go to the movies? Sex. In magazines? Sex. Even advertisements in the street revolve around sex. The one thing that is not emphasized is the dangers of sex. The danger of contracting a sexually transmitted disease. I'm sure that people know that AIDS is the most dangerous STD right now, but there are other diseases to watch out for. These other diseases which I will discuss, are bad and different in their own ways. When engaging in sex, every person should be educated about the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases, how to prevent STD's, and how to get treatment if a pe rson has an STD.    Talking about sex may not be a comfortable subject for everyone, but people should. Sex is not a game. When it comes down to getting an STD, there is no joke behind it. People have to realize that they are not the only ones in danger, the people they have sex with are also in danger. There are a couple ways people can prevent themselves from STD's. The first way is by practicing abstinence (not having sex). I am not saying people have to practice abstinence, but it is one of the ways. A second way is by the use of condoms, but only when used correctly. In an article titled, "1993 Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines" from the Journal of School Health, it lists some recommendations of... ...meone is infected or not. People need to know their partner well, and if someone has, or thinks they have an STD, they should go get checked right away. They will be doing themselves a favor, and others. Without these referrals and repeat business these companies would have to rely a lot on marketing and advertising strategies. My reasoning behind my choices for these businesses that would not benefit from the five questions is because these companies are very well expanded. With many stores in many different locations of one state and through-out many states these companies do not rely on word of mouth or repeat business. As their marketing strategies, advertising strategies, and sales are what continuously brings in repeat customer, and new customers.

The U.S.A. cannot just step in and tell Cuba that their standards and beliefs are wrong. Ethics No, the Cuban government and Club Mediteranee by ethical, societal, or U.S. standards act morally in the joint venture of building their facilities on the Glen’s beachfront property without establishing a contract or making payment to the Glen’s for their beachfront property. By our society standards and beliefs, in the U.S.A. this would be considered stealing. Although we might see this as immoral and illegal Cuba may not, because their country may have no compunction to take what is not theirs and use it as they see fit does not give another country the right to sit in judgment because each culture and civilization has their own ethical standards and we cannot place our standards on other countries because that would be unethical. Note that not every passive construction is evil sometimes what seems to be the false subject is worthy of prominence but a preponderance of passive constructions leads to a wearying read. 1. â€Å"There is a considerable range of expertise demonstrated by the spam senders.† The actors in this little drama are the spam spenders or, to be more active, the spam senders are the actors in this little drama. Direct them center stage, and send the weak â€Å"there is† opening packing to the provinces: â€Å"The spam senders demonstrate a considerable range of expertise.† 2. â€Å"It was determined by the committee that the report was inconclusive.† Again, the subject is weak and indeterminate. Two actors, the committee and the report, are vying for the lead role here, but committee is the bearer of the news about the report, and to place the report the head of the sentence would be to replace one passive sentence with another. Attend to the actors: â€Å"The committee determined that the report was inconclusive.† 3. â€Å"We were invited by our neighbors to attend their party.† We is stronger than it as a sentence opener, but â€Å"our neighbors† is stronger still: â€Å"Our neighbors invited us to attend their party.† 4. â€Å"Groups help participants realize that most of their problems and secrets are shared by others in the group.† This sentence starts off actively but then turns and bellies up in the middle; emphasizing â€Å"others in the group† over â€Å"most of their problems and secrets† makes the sentence more active: â€Å"Groups help participants realize that others in the group share most of their problems and secrets.† 5. â€Å"The proposed initiative will be bitterly opposed by abortion rights groups.† The content may be about the proposed initiative, but that doesn’t preclude given a sentence about it a more dynamic structure: â€Å"Abortion rights groups will bitterly oppose the proposed initiative.† 6. â€Å"Minor keys, modal movement, and arpeggios are shared by both musical traditions.† The writer is detailing key information at the head of this sentence, but starting off with the context is stronger: â€Å"Both musical traditions share minor keys, modal movement, and arpeggios.† 7. â€Å"In this way, the old religion was able to survive the onslaught of new ideas until the old gods were finally displaced by Christianity.† Remember when I wrote that not every passive voice should be targeted for reconstruction? This sentence is more active, but no more correct: â€Å"In this way, the old religion was able to survive the onslaught of new ideas until Christianity finally displaced the old gods.† Perhaps the newcomer, Christianity, should also come later in the sentence. Again, don’t indiscriminately exterminate passive construction at the expense of the writer’s voice or intent, but do exercise judicial revision to rejuvenate pallid prose. Creating Memorable Characters On this episode, we discuss the challenging process of creating memorable characters when writing fiction. Some of the topics we discuss are:Digging deep into a character study – You do this by getting to know the characters personally, and by digging deep into a character study that considers every aspect of their being. These would be details of their personality, hopes and dreams, history, quirks or eccentricities, moral/ethical/religious beliefs, fears or phobias, political stance, hobbies, likes and dislikes, short- and long-term goals, and habits.Thinking about their physical characteristics – How do they walk? What kind of clothes do they wear? What is the tone of their voice? Is their hair colored? Do they wear jewelry, and if so, what kind? Do they have a unique mark, such as a tattoo or scar, and if so, how did they get it? Do they have laugh lines around their mouth? Prepare your paperwork.There’s quite a bit of paperwork involved in securing a travel nurse position. An application, skills checklist, and clinical references will be included in your submission profile. Your nursing agency will provide you with these documents and expect you to complete them. Also be sure to have all required licenses and certifications, as well as recently obtained medical records, in order.6.
